Three Key Concepts

Our program is built on three foundational pillars that create lasting change

Creating Agency for Upstanders

We empower students to become active upstanders by giving them the tools, language, and confidence to stand up against bullying in safe and effective ways.

Creating Safe Spaces

We establish environments where everyone feels safe to express themselves, make mistakes, and grow—including those who have engaged in bullying behavior.

Transformation Pathway

We create an impactful culture where students who bully can choose to transform into upstanders, shedding the identity of "bully" for a positive role in the community.

What Actually Is Bullying?

Contrary to popular belief, most people don't know what a true bullying scenario is. Many confuse regular conflict with bullying.

The Real Definition

Bullying occurs when there is an imbalance of power. It's when one party is bigger, stronger, has more resources, or has more people behind them than the other party being bullied.

NOT Bullying:

Two students having a conflict or disagreement where both have equal power and standing

IS Bullying:

One student using their advantage (size, strength, social status, or numbers) to intimidate or harm another student who has less power

Understanding the difference between conflict and bullying

Teaching Agency Through "I Statements"

When students are equipped with the right language and tools, they can address conflicts confidently and appropriately

The "I Statement" Process

1

Confront Clearly with an "I Statement"

Students learn to directly address the person who wronged them using clear, assertive language.

Example: "I did not appreciate you taking the ball from me. I would like to have it back."

2

Opportunity to Make It Right

The person who took the ball (or committed the wrong) has an opportunity to correct their behavior and make things right.

3

Report to Teacher or Faculty

If the person does not make it right, then—and only then—should the student report the issue to a teacher or faculty member.

Empowers Students

Students who may be afraid to speak up gain confidence and learn to stand up for themselves in the right way, using the right language.

Reduces Tattling

Teachers can ask, "Did you use your I statement?" This reduces unnecessary reports and teaches students to handle appropriate conflicts independently.

Transforming School Culture

When everyone in the school understands and uses the same language, the entire culture shifts

Positive school culture with diverse students

A Shared Standard for Everyone

When students, teachers, administrators, and parents all understand what's acceptable and what's not, accountability becomes natural and consistent.

Universal Language

Everyone speaks the same language about conflict and bullying

Clear Expectations

Students know exactly what's expected and how to respond

Consistent Accountability

Everyone is held to the same standard across the school

Empowered Community

Students become active participants in creating a positive culture

The Result: Lasting Change

This isn't a temporary fix. It's a fundamental shift in how your school community approaches conflict, bullying, and relationships.

More Upstanders

Students actively stand up against bullying

Safer Environment

Everyone feels safe to learn and grow

Positive Culture

A culture of respect, kindness, and accountability
